Our core gardening services include:

Why Mulching Matters

Mulching isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about protecting and feeding your garden. A proper layer of mulch helps regulate soil temperature, conserve water, and suppress weeds, keeping your plants healthy year-round.

Mulches generally fall into two categories: organic and inorganic. Organic mulches, such as bark or straw, are derived from plant material and decompose over time, improving soil quality. Inorganic mulches, like stones or gravel, are durable, low-maintenance options that do not decompose or add nutrients but are ideal for long-lasting coverage. Using mulch can also help prevent soil-borne diseases by acting as a barrier between soil and plants.

Sydney’s hot summers and dry spells make mulching an essential part of garden maintenance. The right mulch acts as a natural barrier against the harsh Australian climate, protecting your plants from extreme heat and improving soil quality over time.

At Pab’s Facility Services, we bring years of experience helping clients across the Sutherland Shire, Bayside Area, and Sydney City choose and apply mulch that suits their specific soil, plants, and garden design.

Mulching provides numerous benefits beyond just visual appeal:

As organic mulch decomposes, it releases nutrients into the soil, helping replenish them and further supporting plant health.

Our Mulching Process

Our mulching process is designed to deliver lasting results and a neat, professional finish:

Site Inspection & Quote

We start by inspecting your garden beds and soil condition to recommend the right type and depth of mulch

Preparation

All weeds, debris, and old mulch are cleared. The soil is turned and aerated for better absorption.

Edging and Containment

We create defined edges to keep the mulch neatly in place and prevent it from spilling into paths or lawns.

Mulch Application

We apply mulch at the optimal depth (typically 50–75mm), ensuring it is spread evenly for maximum coverage and benefits.

Clean-Up and Finishing

All pathways and surfaces are swept clean, leaving your garden tidy and ready to enjoy.

Choosing the Right Type of Mulch

There are two main types of mulch: organic and inorganic. Organic mulches are made from natural, biodegradable materials that decompose over time, such as bark, wood chips, leaves, grass clippings, straw, pine needles, pine straw, sugar cane, salt hay, and compost. Inorganic mulch includes materials such as stone, gravel, and landscape fabric that do not decompose and are often used as permanent mulch in low-maintenance areas. We work with a wide variety of mulches suitable for Sydney gardens, including:

Using Organic materials

Organic materials such as yard waste (leaves, grass clippings) can be repurposed as mulch to enhance soil health and reduce waste. Be aware that some mulches, especially those made from organic materials such as straw or hay, may contain weed seeds. Additionally, certain mulches (such as unshredded leaves or thick layers of grass clippings) can form a mat that impedes water penetration and airflow, which can negatively impact soil and plant health.

Permanent mulch options, such as stone or landscape fabric, are ideal for areas where low maintenance and minimal planting are desired, but they can make future planting more difficult.

Some mulches, such as pine needles and pine straw, are especially beneficial for acid-loving plants.

Mulching Tips:

Not sure what’s best for your garden? Pablo and the team will guide you through the options based on your soil type, plants, and garden goals.

Calculating Mulch Needs

Knowing how much mulch to use is key to achieving the best results for your garden beds, trees, and landscape areas. Applying the right amount of mulch not only helps suppress weeds and retain soil moisture but also ensures your plants get the full benefits of proper mulching without wasting materials or risking plant health.

Step 1: Measure Your Garden Bed Start by measuring the length and width of the area you want to cover—whether it’s a flower bed, around trees, or along pathways. Multiply these numbers to get the total square footage.

Step 2: Decide on Mulch Depth For most gardens, a 2- to 4-inch (about 50–100mm) layer of mulch is ideal. This depth is enough to suppress weed growth, regulate soil temperatures, and keep moisture in the soil, without smothering plant roots.

Step 3: Calculate How Much Mulch You Need To work out the volume, multiply your total area by the depth of mulch you want to apply (convert inches to feet for easy calculation: 3 inches = 0.25 feet).

Example: If your garden bed is 10 feet by 10 feet (100 square feet) and you want a 3-inch layer:

  • 100 sq ft x 0.25 ft = 25 cubic feet of mulch needed.

Most mulch bags contain about two cubic feet, so you’d need around 12–13 bags for this area.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should mulch be replaced?

We recommend refreshing or topping up your mulch every 12–18 months, depending on weather exposure and the type of mulch.

Autumn and spring are ideal. These seasons help lock in soil moisture before temperature extremes. Fall and winter are also strategic times for mulching, as applying mulch during these periods protects bare soil and plants from erosion, cold, and freeze-thaw cycles.

Yes, we handle both delivery and installation using high-quality mulch sourced from trusted local suppliers.

Generally, a 50–75mm layer is best for moisture retention and weed suppression without suffocating roots. Some mulches, if used too thickly or not adequately prepared, can prevent water from penetrating the soil.

Absolutely. Many of our clients include mulching as part of a garden clean-up or seasonal maintenance package for a complete transformation. When applying mulch, spread it directly onto bare soil to maximise its protective benefits.

Mulching is placing a protective layer of material, such as bark, wood chips, leaves, or compost, over the soil surface around plants.
The primary purpose of mulching is to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, regulate soil temperature, and improve overall garden health.
In Sydney’s climate, mulching is one of the most effective ways to protect gardens from heat, evaporation, and erosion while keeping them neat and visually appealing.

When done correctly, mulching has very few downsides. However, the most common issue is applying mulch too thickly or too close to plant stems.
Excess mulch can:

  • Prevent water from reaching the roots,
  • Encourage pests or fungus, and
  • Suffocate plants by trapping too much moisture.

That’s why it’s crucial to have mulch professionally installed. Our team ensures the right type, depth, and spacing to keep your garden healthy and balanced.

The best mulch depends on your garden’s needs and location:

  • Pine Bark Mulch – Long-lasting and ideal for decorative landscapes.
  • Eucalyptus Mulch – Excellent for native Sydney gardens and pest resistance.
  • Hardwood Chips – Durable and perfect for high-traffic areas or garden edges.
  • Compost or Leaf Mulch – Great for enriching garden beds and vegetable patches.

Pab’s Facility Services can help you choose the right mulch type based on your plants, soil conditions, and preferred look.

Most plants benefit from mulching, but some succulents, cacti, and plants that prefer dry soil can suffer if too much moisture is trapped.
Examples include:

  • Agave
  • Aloe vera
  • Certain Mediterranean herbs (like rosemary and lavender)

For these species, we recommend minimal mulching or using gravel mulch to allow proper drainage. When in doubt, Pablo and his team will advise on the best approach for your specific garden.

Yes — we regularly provide mulching and garden maintenance for strata complexes, NDIS homes, and managed properties across Sydney. Our team works with building managers and support coordinators to ensure every site stays compliant, tidy, and low-maintenance.

Pine bark and hardwood chip mulch tend to last the longest up to 2–3 years before needing replacement. They decompose slowly, resist compaction, and hold their colour well, making them ideal for Sydney’s variable weather conditions.

Yes. A thick layer of quality mulch (50–75mm) blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds, stopping them from germinating. Combined with pre-mulch weeding and edging, this creates a long-term barrier against unwanted growth.
